SEOUL -- South Korea began a real-name trading system for cryptocurrencies Tuesday, banning the use of anonymous bank accounts in transactions to prevent virtual coins from being used for money laundering and other illegal activities.

The real-name trading system is also part of the government's latest measures to curb speculative investment into virtual coins amid growing fears that a cryptocurrency bubble may be set to burst.

Prosecutors demand death sentence for 'molar father' in killing of teen girl

SEOUL -- Prosecutors demanded the death sentence Tuesday for a man charged with killing a school friend of his teenage daughter after sexually molesting her.

Lee Young-hak, 35, has confessed to killing the 14-year-old girl in late September after drugging her to sleep and committing lewd acts on her body, with sex toys, to satisfy his sexual desire.

(LEAD) S. Korean nuke envoy to leave for Russia for discussion on N.K. issues

SEOUL -- South Korea's top nuclear envoy will travel to Russia this week to discuss cooperation in dealing with North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Lee Do-hoon, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, will leave for Moscow for a three-day trip Wednesday during which he is to meet his Russian counterpart and Vice Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and other officials, according to the ministry.

Top U.S. Air Force officials vow 'extended deterrence' for S. Korea

SEOUL -- U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson assured South Korea on Tuesday of an extended deterrence commitment, during a meeting with a top defense official here.

She discussed alliance issues during talks with Vice Defense Minister Suh Choo-suk in Seoul, joined by two other visiting high-ranking U.S. Air Force officials -- Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein and Pacific Air Forces Commander Gen. Terrence O'shaughnessy -- according to Suh's ministry.

(LEAD) Legislative battles brew as extra parliamentary session begins

SEOUL -- The National Assembly on Tuesday kicked off a monthlong extraordinary session with rival parties bracing for legislative battles over a series of pending bills, a constitutional revision and other political issues.

The parties first passed a set of bills aimed at bolstering the country's firefighting capabilities in the wake of last week's hospital fire in the southeastern city of Miryang that killed 39 people.

(LEAD) S. Korea pressing ahead with joint ski training in N.K. amid uncertainty

SEOUL -- South Korea is preparing for joint skiing training with North Korea at a ski resort in the North as earlier agreed, as Pyongyang has not said anything unusual following its cancellation of a planned cultural event, Seoul officials said Tuesday.

North Korea's abrupt cancellation late Monday of a joint performance slated for Sunday at Mount Kumgang has raised questions about whether scheduled joint skiing exercises or even the North's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics will proceed as planned.
