An internal investigation is underway to find out what caused a KTX bullet train derail after departing from Gangneung on Saturday, and who is responsible for the accident that left 16 people aboard injured.
A joint team of transport ministry and KORAIL officials earlier has tentatively concluded that an error in the railroad switch system that controls the tracks likely caused the derailment.
Meanwhile, the investigation is expected to take months to pinpoint the exact cause and to come up with countermeasures to improve the system.■
