SEOUL -- Officials of South and North Korea will meet this week to discuss cooperation in medical and health sectors, including exchanging information on infectious diseases, the unification ministry said Monday.

The meeting will be held Wednesday at the joint liaison office in the North's border town of Kaesong. This follows up on an agreement in November to cooperate in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and exchange information on such diseases on a trial basis this year.

S. Korea's economy showing signs of gradual slowdown: KDI

SEJONG -- South Korea's economy is showing signs of a gradual slowdown with export growth cooling amid sluggish private consumption, a state-run think tank said Monday.

"The growth pace of exports slowed and domestic demand remained weak, implying that overall economic activity appeared to be gradually slowing," the Korea Development Institute (KDI) said in its monthly evaluation of the country's economic conditions.

Seoul shares down 1.05 pct late Monday morning

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks traded lower late Monday morning as renewed concerns over global trade frictions and slowing economic growth hurt investor sentiment, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index lost 21.74 points, or 1.05 percent, to 2,054.02 as of 11:20 a.m.

(LEAD) KTX Gangneung line resumes operations 2 days after derailment accident

GANGNEUNG, South Korea -- A KTX bullet train service linking Seoul and the eastern city of Gangneung resumed operations Monday, two days after a derailment accident, its operator said.

The Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) said that the first train, carrying around 100 passengers, departed Gangneung, about 240 kilometers east of Seoul, at 5:30 a.m., followed by another train heading to a Seoul station at 5:32 a.m.

Outgoing finance minister says economic difficulties unlikely to ease in near future

SEJONG -- South Korea's outgoing finance minister said Monday the economic difficulties are unlikely to ease in the near future and warned officials against populist policies that could pose a threat to economic growth.

Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon made the remarks a day before Hong Nam-ki, a veteran bureaucrat who had served as head of the government's policy coordination office, takes up the post.

(LEAD) S. Koreans embark on trip to N. Korea for talks on forestry cooperation

SEOUL -- A group of South Korean officials and experts embarked on a trip to North Korea on Monday for talks on forestry cooperation.

A 10-member team led by Lim Sang-seop, a senior official with the Korea Forestry Service, left for Beijing early in the day from which it will fly to the North on Tuesday for a three-day stay in Pyongyang.

Minister: S. Korea pins hopes on 'virtuous cycle' of inter-Korean ties, denuclearization

SEOUL -- South Korea's top diplomat said Monday her government will redouble diplomatic efforts to pull off denuclearization and lasting peace via the "virtuous cycle" of improved inter-Korean relations and progress in the denuclearization process.

Speaking at the opening of the annual gathering of the country's envoys abroad, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said, "Now, we are facing an important opportunity for a resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue."
