Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Yeogeo yuhaebo (譯語類解補 / 역어유해보), 1775, as Early Modern Korean 널판ᄌᆞ (Yale: nelphanco). From (neol, “board, plank”) and 반지 (板子, banji, “board”). Modern reflex of the latter: 판자 (板子, panja, “board”).

  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
