Before hopping on one of Seoul's various modes of transport, picking up a transportation card specific to your type of travel will save you time and money.
For travelers planning a visit around major attractions in the capital, the Discover Seoul Pass offers free admission to at least 30 sites and discounts for performances and duty-free shopping.
The Amazing Pay T-money card is another option that provides even more fare discounts than the basic card and is an accepted payment method at affiliated convenience stores.
Basic T-money cards are sold at subway stations or convenience stores, but special versions are only available at Incheon airport.
The cards also allow passengers to make transfers between the subway and buses up to five times at no extra cost.
The free ride applies for transfers made within 30 minutes or within one hour between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. the next day.
Redeem the cost of the travel card by returning it at the end of the trip at subway station booths -- the remaining balance will be refunded.
