Lesson 1 Choose the Future You Want

When you hear the word ‘intelligence,’ what comes to your mind? Maybe you think about the IQ (intelligence quotient) test. If your IQ is high, you will be considered an ‘intelligent’ person. people might expect you to become a lawyer or a scientist someday. But your IQ cannot account for all the abilities you might possess. While reading the following statements, think about the various ways that people can show intelligence.

Currently I teach college students as a professor, which is what my parents wanted me to do. I’m not satisfied with my job, though. I love traveling most of all, and I’d really like to write stories about my experiences. Since I’m always busy teaching and doing research on campus, I simply don’t have time to do what I love.

Professor Jang is ‘intelligent’ according to his IQ test scores. This value, however, cannot explain various intelligences that people show ― it only measures one’s logical problem solving and linguistic abilities. Even if a person’s IQ is relatively low, chances are that they have other strengths. The concept of ‘multiple intelligences’ can explain this.

According to this theory, there are distinct kinds of intelligence. While a person might be particularly strong in a specific area, they likely possess a range of other abilities. Every human being has every one of these intelligences to a certain degree, some being more prominent than others.

What does this theory have to say about choosing a career? Experts say that you can succeed professionally if your strongest intelligence matches the skills that your job requires. By understanding your strengths, you can see what you are naturally good at, and therefore what you are most likely to be successful at in life.

Let’s go back to the case of Professor Jang. His results showed strong linguistic, naturalistic, and intrapersonal intelligences. His current profession is not strongly related with his innate strengths, so he is unhappy.

Here is another example:

Three years ago I was a government officer. My job was to deal with hundreds of documents, which bored me. I wanted to do something new and creative, so I quit my job. Now I run my own business. It’s not easy, but I’m happy, because it suits my personality perfectly. I’ve invented several household appliances, and that gave me a real sense of achievement. I love my new life!

Identifying your strengths is the key to finding the career that you will enjoy the most. It will give you the drive and motivation to keep going forward. There are certain popular jobs that most people will push you toward, regardless of your personality or aptitude. But keep this in mind: among the various intelligences, some need a great deal of effort to improve, while others are acquired more quickly. Which intelligences do you wish to develop? The choice is yours!

‘지능’이라는 단어를 들었을 때, 당신은 무엇이 떠오르는가? 아마도 당신은 IQ테스트를 생각할 것이다. 만약 당신의 IQ가 높다면, 당신은 ‘지적인’ 사람으로 여겨질 것이다. 사람들을 나중에 당신이 변호사나 과학자가 되리라 생각할지도 모른다. 하지만 IZ가 당신이 가지고 있는 모든 능력을 설명해 줄 수는 없다. 다음 글을 읽으면서, 사람들이 지능을 보여줄 수 있는 여러 가지 방법에 대해서 생각해보자.

현재 저는 교수로서 대학생들을 가르치고 있는데, 그것은 저의 부모님이 제가 하기를 원하셨던 일입니다. 하지만 저는 제 직업에 만족하지 않습니다. 저는 여행을 무엇보다도 좋아하고, 제 경험에 관한 글을 무척 쓰고 싶습니다. 대학에서 가르치고 연구하느라 늘 바쁘기 때문에 저는 제가 좋아하는 일을 할 시간이 없습니다.

장교수는 그의 IQ 시험 점수에 따르면 ‘지적인’ 사람이다. 하지만 이 숫자는 사람들이 보여주는 다양한 지능들을 설명하지는 못한다. 그것은 단지 한 사람의 논리적인 문제 해결 능력이나 언어 능력만을 측정한다. 비록 한 사람의 IQ가 상대적으로 낮다 할지라도 그들이 다른 강점들을 가지고 있을 가능성이 있다. ‘다중 지능’의 개념이 이것을 설명할 수 잇다.

이 이론에 따르면 뚜렷이 다른 지능들이 있다. 한 사람이 어떤 한 특정 분야에 특히 강하더라도 그 사람들은 다른 분야의 능력들도 겸비하고 있을 가능성이 높다. 사람은 누구나 이런 각각의 지능들을 어느 정도 가지고 있으며, 이 중 몇몇은 다른 것들보다 더 뛰어나다.

이 이론은 직업을 선택하는 것에 대해 무엇을 말하고자 하는 것인가? 전문가들은 당신의 가장 강한 지능이 당신의 직업이 원하는 능력과 일치한다면 직업적으로 성공할 수 있을 것이라고 말한다. 당신의 강점을 이해함으로써, 당신은 당신이 천부적으로 잘 하는 것이 무엇인지 알게 되고, 따라서 당신이 인생에서 가장 성공할 가능성이 높은 것이 무엇인지를 알 수 있게 된다.

장교수의 예로 돌아가보자. 그의 결과는 강한 언어지능, 자연지능, 그리고 자기성찰 지능을 보여준다. 그의 현재 직업은 그의 선천적인 강점과 밀접하게 관련되어 있지 않기 때문에 그는 행복하지 않은 것이다.

3년 전 저는 공무원이었습니다. 저의 일은 수백 건의 서류 업무를 처리하는 것이었고, 그것은 저를 질리게 했습니다. 저는 새롭고 창의적인 무언가를 하고 싶어서 직장을 그만두었습니다. 지금 저는 제 개인 사업을 운영하고 있습니다. 그것이 쉽지는 않지만 난 행복합니다. 왜냐하면 제 성격과 완벽히 들어맞기 때문입니다. 저는 여러 개의 가전제품을 발명했고, 그것이 제게 진정한 성취감을 가져다 주었습니다. 저는 저의 새로운 삶을 사랑합니다!

당신의 강점을 확인하는 것은 가장 즐길 수 있는 직업을 찾는 비결이다. 그것은 당신이 계속 전진하도록 추진력과 동기를 제공한다. 당신의 성격과 적성에 관계없이, 대부분의 사람들이 당신에게 강권하는 특정 직업들이 있다. 하지만 명심할 것이 있다 : 많은 지능들 중 어떤 것은 개발하는데 아주 많은 노력을 요하는 반면, 다른 것들은 더 빨리 습득됩니다. 당신은 어떤 지능을 계발시키기 원하는가? 선택은 당신의 몫이다!
