정치인이자 학자였던 금연(錦淵) 정일형 전 의원(1904~1982년)과 이태영 박사(1914년∼1998년)는 평생을 항일운동과 반독재 투쟁에 바친 동지이자 부부였다.
진주 정씨의 일원인 금연은 황해도 안악군 장연면 저도리에서 의병대장 정원모의 손자이자 선비 정기찬(鄭基贊)의 아들로 태어나 어린시절부터 항일의식을 키우며 자랐다.
3·1만세운동이 한창이던 1919년 광성고보 학생이던 그는 평양 거리에서 '대한독립만세'를 불렀고, 주동학생으로 몰려 평양 경찰서에 1주일간 구금됐다.
몇 개월 후에는 임시정부에서 발행하는 독립신문을 배달하다 다시 일본 경찰에 검거됐고, 한 달이 지난 후에야 방면될 수 있었다.
