1. The First Cheque

Nicholas Vanacker made out the first known cheque for £10 and it was drawn on Messrs Clayton & Morris, bankers of Cornhill, on 22 April 1659. Just a bit of paper, but it marks the beginning of banking as we know it today. It was sold at Sotheby's for £1300 in 1976.

2. The First Public Toilet

Known originally as a 'Public Waiting Room' the first 'gents' was opened at 95 Fleet Street by the Society of Arts on 2 February, 1852.

The price of admission, incidentally, was twopence - 'spending a penny' had to wait until the first municipal lavatory opened outside the Royal Exchange in 1855.

3. The First Escalator

Installed in Harrods in 1898 because the manager had a great dislike of lifts. When the first escalator at an underground station was opened at Earls Court in 1911, the District Railway employed 'Bumper' Harris, a man with a wooden leg, to ride up and down it all day to give confidence to the public.

4.The First Multi-storey Car Park

Much earlier than most people might think, this was opened at 6 Denham Street, just off Picadilly Circus in 1901. There were seven floors and a hydraulic lift. It is interesting that even at this time there must have been parking problems in London. It is also surprising that there were enough cars around to fill its 19,000 square feet of floor space.

5. The First Video Recordings

These went on sale at Major Radiovision  of Wigmore Street in June 1953. No, that is not a misprint - home video really did exist in the mid-1930s. The video discs cost seven shillings each and were designed to by played on a video-recorder attached to a low definition TV set. They gave six minutes of recorded sound and vision each side.

1. The First Cheque

Nicholas Vanacker made out the first known cheque for £10 and it was drawn on Messrs Clayton & Morris, bankers of Cornhill, on 22 April 1659.

Just a bit of paper, but it marks the beginning of banking, as we know it today.
