The nation's first ever bullet train service begun operation on April 1. The train is capable of traveling at 300 kilometers per hour and will considerably reduce the traveling time between Seoul and Busan. The benefits for the nation's tourism sector and various businesses are estimated to be very high. However, the opening of the high-speed rail service comes as bad news to some, mostly airline companies and provincialretailers.

After more than ten years of construction work and 18 trillion won's worth of capital, the nation's first bullet train service opened for business on April 1. About 1,800 government officials, dignitaries and celebrities gathered at Seoul Station to celebrate the launch of the Korea Train Express (KTX).

"I hope the start of the Seoul-Busan high-speed train will be an opportunity for the country to advance toward the era of a 20,000 dollars per capita GDP and grow as a new Korea with better welfare,"said Acting President Goh Kun at the opening ceremony. "The high-speed train is a symbol of national competitiveness and lays the ground for our prosperity. From daily lifestyles and businesses, we will experience a range of benefits from the speed revolution."The train is capable of traveling at 300 kilometers per hour and will reduce the traveling time between Seoul and Busan to two hours and 40 minutes. On conventional trains, the journey takes more than four hours. The KTX is the world's fifth of its kind; Japan, France, Germany and Spain all have bullet train services.

The train's operator, Korean National Railroad, estimates that the high-speed rail service will generate around 1.85 trillion won annually in saved logistical costs. This amount is likely to increase in 2010 when the second phase of the construction is completed. The travel time between Seoul and Busan will be reduced further from two hours and 40 minutes to one hour and 56 minutes. The trains will also be able to hold more passengers and cargo. Currently, the trains are 38 meters long and have 935 seats.

Many people are excited by the benefits the train will have on tourism. The southern ports of Busan and Mokpo are expecting a sharp increase in their number of tourists. Busan city's tourism bureau manager, Kim In-bok, expects two million foreign visitors this year, compared to the 1.47 million that came last year. Tak Sang-ryang, manager of the Mokpo Tourism Bureau, believes that his city's tourism budget will more than double. Seo Chun-beom, a president of a tourism consultancy firm, says, "The new railway system will make the infrastructure for long-term growth of the leisure and tourism industry in the nation, stimulating the nation's mobility. Especially beginning in July when big domestic companies implement the five-day workweek, a significant synergy effect is expected for tourism in Korea."However, the train will have a negative impact for some industries. The nation's airline companies have been bracing themselves for a significant reduction in demand. They have been forced to cut the number of domestic flights they offer, and have also made steps to improve customer service.

Many retailers in smaller cities and towns are worried about the effects the train will have on their businesses. The trains will increase residents"mobility, and retailers fear that residents will increasingly travel to the larger cities to shop. Jeong Yeon-woong, a spokesman from one of Daejeon's major department stores, said, "We try to be positive. It is a challenge, but it could be an opportunity for us, as flows of tourists who stop by Daejeon Station may use their spare time to shop here."
