The Korea Train Express, the nation`s bullet train, is considering operation double-decked carriages to cope with a shortfall in service routes.

한국의 특급열차, 즉 고속열차는 운송인원의 부족분을 극복하기 위해 이층열차의 운행을 검토하고 있다.

The Ministry of cons-truction and Transportation said yesterday it is looking into the feasibility of operat-ing two-story rail vehicles along its Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan)line as part of plans to upgrade its network.

건설교통부는 어제 교통망 강화 계획의 일부로 경부선(서울-부산)에 2층열차의 운행 가능성을 검토하고 있다고 말했다.

"We are looking into ways to service double-decked trains in tracks and accommo-date more passengers," a ministry official was quoted as saying by Youhap News agency.

연합뉴스는 건교부당국자의 말을 인용하여 "우리는 이층열차를 운행하여 더 많은 승객을 나를 수 있는지 조사하고 있다"고 보도했다.

The official noted that the serious shortage stems from the KTX and conventional trains sharing the 17.6 kilo-meter track linking Seoul Station and Shiheung Station.

당국자는 서울역과 시흥역을 잇는 17.6킬로미터의 구간을 KTX와 기존열차가 같이 사용하는 데서 발생하는 심각한 장애에 주목했다.

But according to the Construction Ministry, find-ing land space and environ-mental concerns pose as chal-lenges to expanding the rail-way network running beyond Seoul and the metropolitan areas.

그러나 건교부에 따르면 서울과 수도권 지역에 철도를 추가건설하는데는 부지선정과 환경문제로 어려움이 있다.

It would require at least 10 years to build new tracks, it said. "It`s not technically difficult to chang the one-story high-speed trains should be able to run under the KTX Gyeongbu line," the official said.

새로운 철로를 건설하는데는 적어도 10년이 소요될 것이라고 알려져 있다. 그에 대해 당국자는 "KTX의 경부선 밑으로 고속1층열차를 운행하도록 바꾸는데는 아무런 기술적 문제가 없다"고 말했다.

The ministry expects to be able to come up with concrete plans next year and fully be-gin establishing operation plans for the two-story trains.

건교부는 내년에 구체적 계획을 제출하고 2층열차운행 계획을 완전히 세울 수 있을 것으로 예상했다.

The commercial service of the bullet train began on April 1, 2004. Korea is the fifth country in the world to have high-speed rail vehicles after Japan, France, Ger-many and Spain.

고속철도의 상업운행은 2004년 4월 1일 시작되었다. 한국은 일본, 프랑스, 독일, 스페인에 이어 세계에서 5번째로 고속열차를 운행하는 나라이다.
