The Korea Train Express, the nation`s bullet train, is considering operation double-decked carriages to cope with a shortfall in service routes.

The Ministry of cons-truction and Transportation said yesterday it is looking into the feasibility of operat-ing two-story rail vehicles along its Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan)line as part of plans to upgrade its network.

"We are looking into ways to service double-decked trains in tracks and accommo-date more passengers," a ministry official was quoted as saying by Youhap News agency.

The official noted that the serious shortage stems from the KTX and conventional trains sharing the 17.6 kilo-meter track linking Seoul Station and Shiheung Station.

But according to the Construction Ministry, find-ing land space and environ-mental concerns pose as chal-lenges to expanding the rail-was network running beyond Seoul and the metropolitan areas.

It would require at least 10 years to build new tracks, it said. "It`s not technically difficult to chang the one-story high-speed trains should be able to run under the KTX Gyeongbu line," the official said.

The ministry expects to be able to come up with concrete plans next year and fully be-gin establishing operation plans for the two-story trains.

The commercial service of the bullet train began on April 1, 2004. Korea is the fifth country in the world to have high-speed rail vehicles after Japan, France, Ger-many and Spain.
