본 연구는 여러 학자들의 다문화교육 접근 방식을 살펴보고 이를 토대로 우리나라의 교과서를 분석해 봄으로써 우리나라 다문화교육의 문제점과 개선방안을 제안하는 것에 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 다섯명의 학자들(Banks, Gibson, 설규주, 김용신, 양영자)의 다문화교육 접근 방식을 살펴보았으며, 이들의 접근 방식이 단계별, 연속적으로 점차 확장되어가는 방식으로 체계화되고 있음을 밝혀내었다. 이를 토대로 본 연구자는 접근 방식을 세 가지 수준 1) 객관-인지적 접근, 2) 이해-개방적 접근, 3) 공존-가치지향적 접근으로 분류하여 교과서 분석의 기준을 제시하였는데 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교과서에 실린 다문화교육 요소 대부분이 접근방식 1, 2수준에 머물러 있었다. 둘째, 일부 교과나 일부 주제로 제한되어 전달되고 있었다. 셋째, 체계적인 교육과정이 뒷받침되어 있지 않고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 앞으로 우리나라 다문화교육의 시사점이 무엇인지 제시하였다.
