로렌스 올리비에 Laurence Olivier


20세기 영국 최고의 연극 배우이며, 셰익스피어 해석의 대가로 일컬어지는 로렌스 올리비에는 목사의 아들로 태어나 옥스퍼드 대학교를 졸업하였다.

1922년 셰익스피어의 고향이며, 연극 연구 및 활동의 본고장인 스트래트퍼드 온 에이번의 셰익스피어 연극제에서 첫 무대를 밟은 후 1926에서 28년까지 버밍엄 레퍼토리(Birmingham Repertory) 극장에 소속되었다.
1929년 로열티 극장(Royalty theatre)에서 만난 여배우 질 에스몬드와 약혼, 1년 후에는 결혼에 이른다.

1935년 뉴 시어터(New Theatre)에서 존 길거드와 더블 캐스팅으로 《로미오와 줄리엣》의 로미오와 머큐시오 2개 역에 출연하여 주목을 끌었다.

1937년에는 그의 인생에 결정적인 영향을 끼친 두 가지 사건이 일어난다. 그 하나는 셰익스피어 희곡을 중점적으로 상연하는 런던의 올드빅(Old Vic)극단에 발탁되어 장중한 비극의 주역 배우로서 명성을 얻게 된 것이다. 알렉 기네스, 마이클 레드그레이브 등과 함께 공연한 《햄릿》에서의 햄릿 역으로 격찬을 받았으며 연이어 출연한 《헨리 5세》를 비롯, 《맥베스》, 《오셀로》등에서 셰익스피어 극의 명배우로서 입지를 확고히 다진다.

또한 이 해에 그는 23세의 촉망받는 여배우 비비안 리와 영화 출연을 계기로 만난다. 두 사람은 곧 연인 관계로 발전했으나 양쪽 다 결혼한 상태여서 그들의 관계는 난관에 봉착한다. 파란많은 연애 끝에 1940년, 결국 그는 첫 아내와 이혼하고 비비안 리와 결혼한다.

무대에 올리기 어렵기로 이름났던 《리차드 3세》의 대성공 이후, 1944년부터 49년에 이르기까지는 랄프 리차드슨과 함께 올드 빅의 공동 감독으로도 활동하였다. 그 중 1946년 《리어 왕》에서 연출과 주연을 겸하여 39세의 나이로 70대의 노왕 역을 훌륭히 연기, 관객과 비평가들을 놀라게 하였다.

1955년 로열 셰익스피어 극장에서 《타이타스 안드로니쿠스》의 부활 상연을 한 점이 주목할 만하며, 그밖에도 소포클레스의 비극《오이디푸스왕》(1945)과 같은 고전극이나 R.B.셰리든의 《스캔들학교：The School for Scandal》(1948), C.프라이의 《관찰된 비너스》(1950) 등에서 뛰어난 연기를 보였고, 또 현대극에서도 다채로운 재능을 발휘하였다.

그러나 그간 무대에서의 빛나는 활약과 달리, 그의 개인적 삶은 순탄하지 못했다. 아내 비비안 리의 육체적, 정신적 질병으로 인해 부부 사이는 거의 파국에 이르렀기 때문이다. 1960년 비비안 리와의 20년에 걸친 결혼을 정리하고, 22세 연하의 여배우 조안 플로라이트와 재혼한다. 이들의 결혼생활은 1989년 그가 사망할 때까지 계속된다.

영화계에서도 활약하여 《폭풍의 언덕》(1939), 《레베카》(1940) 등에서 호평을 받았으며 《헨리 5세》(1945), 《리처드 3세》(1955)를 감독 ·주연하였고, 특히 스스로 감독 ·제작 ·주연한 《햄릿》은 1948년도 아카데미 4개 부문과 베니스 영화제 작품상을 수상하였다.
1947년 나이트 칭호를 받았고, 1970년에는 남작의 칭호를 받게 된다. 1963년에서 10년 동안 영국 국립 극장의 초대 연출가로 임명되기도 했다.


대로마 제국을 뒤 흔든 노예 반란 사건을 다룬 제작비 1200만 달러의 스펙타클 고전 명작이자 초호화 배역진이 펼치는 전쟁 대하물. 자유를 향한 인간의 갈망과 뜨거운 사랑 등이 서사 영웅담으로 다채롭게 펼쳐진다. 독특한 주제들의 영화들을 제작한 스탠리 큐브릭 감독의 초기 작품에 해당하는데, 그의 영화와는 다른 다소 상업적인 면이 많아 제작 당시에는 혹평을 받기도 했다.

스탠리 큐브릭은 이 작품을 자기 작품으로 인정하지 않았다. 미셸 시몽과의 인터뷰에서 스탠리 큐브릭은 이렇게 말했다. "난 이 영화를 가능한 사실적으로 만들려 했다. 그래서 스팔타커스가 누구인지에 관해 신뢰할 만한 요소가 거의 없는 멍청한 시나리오에 반발했다. 만약 용납될 수 있는 한계 안에서만 필요하다면, 감독이란 그저 돈많이 받는 다른 기능공이나 제작자나 다를 바 없다. 내 생애에서 <스팔타커스>가 그 증거다."

사태가 이렇게 된 데는 여러 가지 이유가 있지만 제작사인 유니버설 스튜디오의 제작 통제와 장면 삭제가 결정적이었다. 매카시즘의 블랙리스트에 올랐던 <스팔타커스>의 시나리오 작가 달턴 트럼보(Dalton Trumbo)에 따르면 당시 유니버설 사장 에드워드 뮬은 이 영화가 스펙터클이 아니라 제작비 3-400만달러의 역사물이 될 거라고 생각했다. 그는 원로원 안의 갈등을 현실 정치에 빗대 표현하는데 관심이 많았고, 결과적으로 <스팔타커스>에 1200만달러나 쏟아부을 줄 몰랐던 것이다.

주연 배우이자 기획자였던 커크 더글라스의 생각은 또 달랐다. 그는 로맨스와 노예 반란이 절반씩 들어간 영웅담을 원했다. 이런 환경에서 스탠리 큐브릭은 로마 제국을 무너뜨릴 수도 있던 노예 반란군의 역사를 제대로 그릴 수 없었고, 로마군과의 전투 장면이 대폭 줄어들었다. 영화 연구자 던컨 L. 쿠퍼는 <시네아스트>에서 이 영화의 감독판은 스팔타커스의 노예 군대가 승리하는 전쟁 장면들을 새로 찍어 넣어야 가능하다고 말한다. 그나마 202분 분량의 <스팔타커스> 마지막 시사본은 1975년 유니버설에 의해 폐품 처리됐고 198분 버전이 남아있는 가장 긴 편집본이 됐다.

1960년 당시 이 영화의 상영시간은 184분, 7년 뒤 영화는 161분으로 더 줄었다. 그리고 1991년 <아라비아의 로렌스>를 복구한 로버트 A.해리스가 컬러와 사운드를 보완한 198분 편집본을 부활시켰다. 해리스의 편집본에는 로렌스 올리비에가 토니 커티스의 시중을 받으며 목욕하는 유명한 장면이 되살아났다. 이 장면은 제작 당시 동성애를 암시한다는 이유로 삭제됐던 것. 올리비에가 "난 굴(여자)과 달팽이(남자) 양쪽 다 즐기지"라고 말하는 이 장면은 그의 사후에 복구된 탓에 앤서니 홉킨스가 목소리 연기를 대신했다. 우여곡절이 많지만 졸작 취급되던 <스팔타커스>는 후대에 새로운 평가를 받았다. 후일 스탠리 큐브릭도 영화사에서 멋대로 편집한 <스팔타커스>에 대해 "내가 예상했던 것보단 나았다"고 말했다.
