A three-man fact-finding mission from the National Assembly Culture-Tourism Committee rang an alarm bell on the future of "Hallyu," or the Korean wave of pop culture now sweeping East Asia, after making a tour of the region.
In their views, Hallyu will meet its end within two to three years, or in five years at the longest, if no serious efforts are made by the entertainment business and government authorities to keep it alive.
Despite the team`s pessimistic outlook, there still is plenty of evidence that Korean movies, TV dramas and singers are holding the hearts of the people of our Asian neighbors.
Japanese national network NHK has just begun airing "Winter Sonata," a mini series featuring Bae Yong-joon and Choe Ji-woo, for the fourth time in two years. The New York Times described Bae as the "most-popular man in Japan" in its lengthy article introducing and analyzing the Korean wave in Japan and elsewhere.
A special charter flight landed at Yangyang International Airport in Gangwon Province from Osaka, western Japan, last Saturday carrying Japanese women fans of Bae on their pilgrimage to Chuncheon in the same province, the venue of Winter Sonata. Twelve such special flights are scheduled until the end of March.
Hallyu is credited for a sharp increase in foreign tourist arrivals in Korea last year which far exceeded the year`s target of 5 million. The number of Japanese visitors grew 37 percent from 2003, contributing considerably to the overall increase rate of 24 percent. Economists estimate that the Bae Yong-joon phenomenon alone created an economic effect worth $2.3 billion.
Hallyu cannot be forever but its life will depend on the quality of its contents. Japanese middle-aged women fans of Bae are said to be attracted by his tenderly loving image that quenches their thirst for romance.
The strength of Korean TV dramas lies in the uninhibited, free-spirited performance of actors and actresses who are enjoying full freedom of expression along with their writers, directors and producers in the free atmosphere of our society.
Hallyu is a natural phenomenon. It is not the result of any extraordinary marketing efforts nor is being particularly benefited by global free trade. The great artistic talents of young Korean actors and singers, the experimental spirits of new generation movie directors and the entrepreneurship of pop art lovers have combined to create great works of entertainment. Their products overflowed from this country and spread massively to Japan, China and Southeast Asia helped by cultural affinity in the region.
We don`t have to worry too much about a swift ebbing of Hallyu. The Korean wave marks just the beginning of a regional and global rise in the cultural exchanges in this new age of universal political freedom and economic liberalism. All people should be able to enjoy each other`s culture across national borders, which is the surest avenue to international peace
